The Bush Devil Ate Sam is an important record and a serious story, yet told easily, and with delightful humor. This is one of the most satisfying books I have ever read, because it entertained me thoroughly AND made me feel better informed. —Hilary Custance Green: British Author... What fun! The best part about wanders is all the encountered wonders.
Enjoyed all the creatures – so cute and different from here
Have to agree. And the neat thing is our world is full of them. Thanks. A different world, for sure. Still, we share a lot of the birdlife or close species. Our trip to the Everglades just reminded me of that.
Oh the snakes! I can imagine that you met many critters that reminded you to check your footing every once in a while! And happy birthday! Wonderful that you and your partner can get out there! I appreciate it!
It’s always wise to look where you are stepping when you are in snake country, Wendy! I’ve had a few close calls. Thanks on the birthday wish. Peggy and I are thankful that we can still wander. And lucky!
Can’t handle the snakes!!
And to think you live in a land of snakes, G. 😳
Around here you don’t see many, especially since the egrets eat them. (Thank goodness!)
Here birdy, birdy, birdy…. 😁
A great round up of your African wildlife encounters.
Alison
Would you believe I am almost to the end of my Africa posts! Four more may do it. Grin. Thanks, Alison.
A mongoose is fearless. The only kill i saw in Africa was a mongoose getting a snake.
I’ve only seen videos or a mongoose taking on a snake, Peggy. It was impressive!
What a collection, Curt! I definitely prefer to see the snakes from the comfort of my chair, but like you, I might be tempted to go closer for a better shot😜
Happy belated birthday!
Christie
Laughing. I think Peggy is quite happy that my new camera allows me to get up close from farther away. 🙂 And thanks on the birthday, Christie.
Happy Birthday! I’m glad none of the creatures you encountered shortened your life span!
The mongooses (mongeese?) are interesting. The patterns on their fur makes them look rippled. In the photo showing them grazing around, there’s a similarity to armadillos, especially in their shape, but also in the texture of their ‘covering.’ My favorite of all the creatures here is the rock agama. The colors are beautiful: almost gem-like.
The mongoose just showing up in our room’s back yard and on the patio was a real treat, Linda. One of the many such experiences we had in Africa. And the rock agama is certainly one of the most beautiful lizards I have ever seen.
Oh yeah. And thanks on the happy birthday.
This was a post for me, Curt! I do love reptiles! My faves of the day are the gem-blue southern African rock agama – what a beauty. (Oh, funny. I just noticed that Linda described it the same way. Here I was, thinking I was being original.) ❤ Also, that black snake is gorgeous and I want to pet it. I had never heard of a hyrax before your last post, and they are adorable. Love those big fuzzy feet. I have never seen close up mongoose photos, and would never have guessed how cute they are.
You and your camera would have had a blast in Africa, Crystal. We couldn’t turn around without a photo op. Right down to the lizards.
I don’t know if I’d call a snake cute, Curt. I don’t mind our little Oregon garter snakes, but those big African snakes are a bit scary. I’d keep a broom on hand at all times! And yes, the hydrax is very cute. Happy Travels!
Oh wow, Curt… this is quite a collection of amazing animals. The mongoose have beautiful markings and the face is very cute. . I wouldn’t know which snake would be the most poisonous so I’d stay clear of all of them. ha.. Happy Birthday, Curt❣️
Laughing. See a snake with a heat like the adder, I’d immediately assume poisonous. When I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, the tribal people assumed all snakes were poisonous. Best assumption to make if you don’t know… 🤪
Probably true.. glad you got a laugh💕. Sounds like you need one right now🙏🏼
